Special Duty Statuses
In certain circumstances, a motor carrier may have special duty statuses enabled such as Personal Conveyance (PC) or Yard Moves (YM). Special duty statuses can be enabled or disabled on an individual driver basis in their profile under Manage Drivers in Ground Traffic Control. A driver will receive a notification on the tablet when changes are made to their driver profile.
Special duty status must be selected prior to the vehicle moving. If the vehicle is in motion and a special duty status has not been selected, an Automatic Drive event will be created. The Automatic Drive event will not be able to be edited.
CCMTA requires a valid connection to the vehicle ECM to use special duty statuses. This means that the tablet must be docked and the engine must be running before the driver logs will allow the driver to enter a special duty status.
The special duty statuses act as described on this page when the operating zone is designated as Canada North of 60 or Canada South of 60. When the operating zone is set to US, special duty statuses act as described on Special Duty Status in the US ELD manual.
Special Duty Status Display
The grid view on the Driver Logs screen indicates when a special duty status has been used. YM for Yard Move or PC for Personal Conveyance is displayed next to the duty status entry and it is colored differently (see below). In the list view, however, the indicator on the right will display “YM” for yard movement and “PC” for personal conveyance.
This example shows a driver having selected both special driving conditions.
Personal Conveyance
Drivers can manually select “Personal Conveyance” when they are using the vehicle for personal use. The time period when the driver is using Personal Conveyance is recorded with a corresponding color code and “PC” on the grid.
- From the Application home screen, tap the menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen and tap Update Duty Status.
- From the Update Duty Status screen, tap Off Duty, then Personal Conveyance.
- Tap Apply.
The driver will need to update their duty status to stop accumulating Personal Conveyance. When a driver is in PC and shuts the engine off, at next key on the driver will receive a prompt to remain in PC or to update duty status. If the driver does not respond to the prompt and begins driving, PC will be removed and drive time will be recorded.
CCMTA allows a maximum of 75 km of personal conveyance per day. The driver is notified they are approaching the limit after 65 km. When 75 km is reached, the tablet will automatically switch to Drive status and no further PC status may be selected for the remainder of the 24 hour period.
Yard Moves
Drivers can use Yard Moves when operating a vehicle within a designated yard. The time period when the driver is in Yard Movement will be recorded as an “ON Duty” with a corresponding color code and “YM” on the grid. Drivers have the ability to manually start and end Yard Moves.
Yard Move requires the vehicle to be within a geofenced area classified as a Zonar Yard in Ground Traffic Control. See Manage Zones for more information.
- From the Application home screen, tap the menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen and tap Update Duty Status.
- From the Update Duty Status screen, tap On Duty, then Yard Moves.
- Tap Apply.
When a driver is in YM and shuts the engine off, at next key on the driver will receive a prompt to remain in YM or to update duty status. If the driver does not respond to the prompt and begins driving, YM will be removed and drive time will be recorded.
The Yard Move status is cleared and changed to Drive in the following situations:
- The vehicle leaves the geofenced yard.
- The vehicle speed exceeds 32 km/h
Exempt Driver Status
The motor carrier has the ability to set individual drivers to an “Exempt Driver Status” if they operate under exemptions that do not require a driver to maintain a Record of Duty Status.
Drivers must contact dispatchers in order to get an exempt status. The exempt status is proactively set by only the motor carrier. Also, if the driver exceeds an exemption, it is not automatically changed; the driver shall contact their motor carrier when this setting needs to be updated.
A driver’s exempt status is displayed in Roadside View, at log in, and log out events.
Adverse Driving Conditions
If unforeseen weather or road conditions cause delays, the Adverse Driving Condition may be applied, which extends available drive time by 2 hours, reducing the Daily Off Duty Time requirement by 2 hours.
When the Adverse Driving Condition is active, the relevant clocks are flagged and adjusted accordingly.
The Adverse Driving Condition is cleared when the Drive event ends, regardless of whether or not the full 2 hours has elapsed.
- Tap the menu icon to open the ZLogs menu.
- Select Apply Driving Exemption.
- Select Adverse driving condition and tap Continue.
- Notate the reason for enabling Adverse Driving and tap Save.
