Overview
The Posted Speed report provides an at-a-glance review of speeding events by your fleet. You can review speeding events grouped by asset, an individual asset's speeding events, or individual speeding events for all assets.
Zonar calculates speeding events by comparing the asset's recorded speed against the posted speed limit for the roads the asset traveled on. The posted speed limits are provided by HERE© Maps. See Posted Speed Data Disclaimers at the bottom of this article for more details on Zonar's posted speed data.
Severity
The Posted Speed report categorizes speeding events based on three parameters. All three can be customized to your fleet's needs in Threshold Settings.
-
Duration (grace period): The amount of time an asset can be over the speed limit before a speeding event is logged. Defaults to 30 seconds.
The grace period is not included in the total duration of the speeding event. It is assumed that the grace period is an acceptable length of time to be over the speed limit and so is not counted against the asset. For example, using the default period of 30 seconds, if an asset spent 85 seconds speeding, the report will log the speeding event as 55 seconds.
- Minor: A low severity speeding event. Speeding over the posted limit but below the Minor threshold is not counted as a speeding event. Defaults to 5 miles per hour over the speed limit.
- Critical: A high severity speeding event. If a speeding event reaches the Critical threshold, it no longer counts as a Minor event. Defaults to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Speed Classification
An asset's speed classification determines which posted speed limits apply to that asset. You can set the asset's speed class in Manage Assets.
- Standard: The typical posted speed limit for the road is used.
- Truck: If the road shows a different posted speed limit for heavy duty trucks, that speed limit is used instead.
- Undefined: Used when a speed class hasn't been set for the asset yet. Undefined uses the truck speed limit. If you want the asset to use standard speed limits, which are typically less restrictive, be sure to change its speed class appropriately.
Asset Summary
The Asset Summary report presents the assets in your fleet and high-level data regarding each asset's speeding events. You can drill down into a specific asset to see details on its speeding events.
- View: Click the tabs to switch between Asset Summary and Event View.
- Filters: Click to filter the reported data by date, severity, asset, or speed class. See Filters for more information.
- Speeding events by asset: Displays assets which have speeding events and match the selected filters. See Speeding Events by Asset for more information.
Filters
The provided filters allow you to restrict the data to a certain time period or group of assets so that you can quickly review pertinent information.
-
Date Range: Click to define the range of time issues should filter to. Defaults to previous 7 days. Available options:
- Today
- Previous 7 days
- Previous 14 days
- Previous 30 days
- Custom: Click the starting date on the calendar, then click the ending date to define your desired date range. The previous 30 days are available.
- Asset: Click to filter the assets used in the report. The assets are sorted by location and account, if your user profile has permission to view multiple accounts. You may select one or multiple specific assets, locations, or accounts. Defaults to all visible assets.
- Severity: Click to filter the assets by severity.
- Speed Class: Click to filter assets by their speed classification.
Speeding Events by Asset
This report displays all assets with at least one speeding event and which match the selected filters.
- Severity (Sev): Displays the asset's speeding severity. If the asset's speeding events are all Minor severity, this displays as Minor. If the asset has one or more Critical events, this displays asCritical. See Severity for more information.
- Asset: Displays the name of the asset.
- Event Count: Displays the number of speeding events by the asset within the selected date range. Clicking this number will take you to Event View filtered to the specific asset's events.
- Max Over (MPH): Displays how far over the speed limit the asset's most severe speeding event was.
- Speeding Duration: Displays the asset's total time speeding within the selected date range. Does not include grace period time. See Duration under Severity for more information.
- Home Location: Displays the asset's home location as defined in Manage Assets.
- Speed Class: Displays the asset's assigned speed classification. See Speed Classification for more information.
Event View
The Event View displays detailed information about individual speeding events.
- View: Click the tabs to switch between Event View and Asset Summary.
- Filters: Click to filter the reported data by date, severity, asset, or speed class. See Filters for more information.
- Speeding events: Displays individual speeding events which match the selected filters.

Posted Speed Data Disclaimers
Where speeds differ, the Posted Speed refers automotive speeds or truck speeds as applicable. It does not take into consideration variable zones, school zones, or non-white or caution signs such as yellow curve MPH signs. Only white signs are used.
HERE© provides posted speeds used in this report to Zonar. If a posted speed is incorrect or obsolete, see the article How to Report Posted Speed Corrections.
Updates are made quarterly. The Posted Speed database was last updated on April 4, 2024.
Certain roads may not be included in the report results. This may be due to the classification level of the roads. Only arterial roads as defined by the FWHA are included in the posted speed report; non-arterials such as residential roads are not included.
