PTO stands for Power Takeoff, which refers to using the vehicle engine to power auxiliary equipment, such as a bucket crane. Because the engine is running while parked, this activity can be confused with undesired idle time where the engine is not being used productively.
This report helps identify which assets are using PTO efficiently by displaying both engine hours and PTO hours along with the percentage used during engine hours OR display asset idles with PTO. A benefit of this report is you can see when a PTO is engaged and for how long.
How does Zonar know when PTO is being used?
Zonar relies on connecting the Telematics Control Unit (TCU) to the activation circuit for the PTO system using the 5-pin data I/O cable during installation. Any system connected to the TCU in this manner can be tracked using this report, although systems which rely on the engine power will be most relevant.
- To access the PTO Engine Hours, from the main menu click Report, then go to Custom Reports and click PTO Engine Hours.
- Set the desired filters for either Engine Hours and PTO Hours or for Idles with PTO, then click the associated Generate Report button.
Note: To switch between the two report types, return to the main menu and select PTO Engine Hours again.
Displays Engine Hours and PTO Hours
This report will display engine hours and PTO hours along with the percentage used during engine hours. This specific report does not involve idle times, only total engine running time.

Select from the following options to generate a specified report:
Asset No. | Select a specified asset or leave it on default “All Assets” for the generated report. |
Asset Type | Select the specific type of an asset for the generated report. |
Input | Select a specified input for the generated report. If there is more than one I/O installed a drop down menu will be provided. |
From/To | Select a beginning and ending date to generate the report. |
GPS Zone | Select a specific zone to only show the use of the I/O within a specified area. |
Show Version 2 Report | Click to use the Version 2 of this report. Leaving it unchecked will use Version 1. |
Report
Asset No. | Clicking on the Asset Info icon will display the available asset information. Clicking on the asset will display all EVIRs reported for that asset. |
Mileage | Displays the total distance that the asset has traveled within the generated report. |
Engine Hours | Displays the total engine hours for the asset(s) within the generated report. |
PTO Hours | Displays the total amount of PTO hours used for the generated report. |
PTO Percentage | Displays what percentage of PTO was used during asset(s) engine hours. |
Should I use Version 1 or Version 2?
Always use Version 2. This will ensure correct calculation of engine hours and percentage of PTO. Zonar cannot guarantee accuracy of the results from using Version 1.
Displays Idles with PTO
This report will display the idle times and the PTO used during each idle duration.

Asset No. | Clicking on the Asset Info icon will display the available asset information. Clicking on the asset will display all EVIRs reported for that asset. |
Idle Count | Displays the total number of sessions that the asset has idled (from Motion Stop to Motion Start), regardless of whether PTO was used or not. |
Max Idle Time | Displays the maximum amount of time the asset idled in a single session. Version 1: PTO time is ignored. Version 2: PTO time is subtracted from the idle time. |
Total Idle Time | Displays the total time the asset has idled during the Date Range set in the report filters. Version 1: PTO time is ignored. Version 2: PTO time is subtracted from the idle time. |
Idle Time Violation | Displays the total amount of idle time for all sessions which exceed the Idle Time Violation Threshold set in the report filters. Version 1: PTO time is ignored. Version 2: PTO time is subtracted from idle time. If an idle session would fall under the violation threshold after PTO is subtracted, it is not included in the total. |
PTO Hours | Displays the total time the PTO was activated. Version 1: Ignores engine status. Version 2: Time when the engine isn't running is subtracted from the PTO time. In other words, only counts PTO time when the asset is idling. |
# Violations | Displays how many times an asset has gone over the Idle Time Violation Threshold. Version 1: PTO time is ignored. Version 2: PTO time is subtracted from idle time. If an idle session would fall under the violation threshold after PTO is subtracted, it is not included in the total. |
Log Details | Idle Times: Clicking on the link will direct you to the Idle report with the associated asset(s) results. Violations: Clicking on the link will direct you to the idle report with the associated asset(s) where it will show how many times the asset has gone into idling violations. |
Should I use Version 1 or Version 2?
For most purposes, Version 2 will give you more actionable results.
-
The Version 1 report lists two disconnected states:
- How long the vehicle was idle (engine on but standing still)
- How long the PTO was activated
The report makes no computations and simply displays idle time and PTO time side by side.
-
The Version 2 report compares idle time and PTO time, and counts any PTO time occurring during idle time as a valid use of the asset's engine and is therefore not wasted idle time.
