Samsung Tab Active Tablet Installation Guide (ProClip)

Important Notice

It is the Owner’s sole responsibility to install and use Zonar products in a manner that will not cause accidents, personal injury or property damage. For the purposes of this notice, “Owner”, “you” and “your” means the party (including any person authorized by that party to use and/or install the Product) that has either: (a) purchased the Product; or (b) leased the Product from Zonar Systems, Inc or its related companies. The Owner of this product is solely responsible for observing safe driving practices. The choice, location, and installation of all components of the Product is critical. If installation is not correct, the Product may not perform as its design or specifications indicate. If in doubt, consult with your vehicle’s manufacturer.

Inventory all Samsung Tab Active tablet items.

Make sure the telematics unit is connected to a minimum 1.5 Amp circuit.

Shut-off engine.

Disconnect the vehicle battery (suggested for heavy-duty vehicles).

Lay out the Samsung Tab Active tablet hardware and cables in a convenient location.

Install the RAM mount and dock.

Connect the power serial cable to the telematics box (V3 or V4): 8-pin connector first, and then the 4-pin connector.

Route the power serial cable through the dashboard to the mounting location.

Re-connect the vehicle battery (if previously disconnected).

☐

Start vehicle engine.

☐

Make sure the telematics box has 3 solid LEDs (Cellular, GPS, and Status) within three minutes.

Dock the Samsung Tab Active tablet (if it is not already docked).

Power on the Samsung Tab Active tablet by holding the power button for 3 seconds.

The first-time boot-up process may take up to seven or more minutes to complete. When the boot-up process is complete, a login screen appears.

Log into the Samsung Tab Active tablet with a driver ID and PIN.

When prompted to automatically use the USB, click OK.

Perform a system check.

Shut off the vehicle engine.

General Guidelines

Drill Holes

  1. Do not drill into the tablet or the dock unit. This will void the warranty.
  2. Capture all drill chips during drilling. Do not allow chips to fall onto equipment, furnishings, etc.
  3. De-burr all drill holes on both sides of drilled surface.
  4. All drill holes must have a rubber grommet or similar anti-chafing system installed to protect cable assemblies (e.g. plastic conduit).
  5. Seal all penetration drill holes which may pass rain water.

Cable Management

  1. Strain relieve and support all cable installations.
  2. Avoid sharp bends and tight radius installations of cables.
  3. Avoid moving components (e.g. doors, steering shafts, handles, fans, etc.).
  4. Provide an adequate “Service Loop” (i.e. “cable slack”) to allow for servicing of equipment.
  5. Avoid routing cables through doors, windows, and other pinch points.
  6. Avoid routing cables where personnel may snag or damage the cabling.
  7. Avoid routing antenna cables near radio and PA equipment.

General Housekeeping

  1. Capture all drill chips during drilling operations. Magnets, sticky tape, vacuums, physical barriers, etc. may all be used to accomplish this task. Do not allow drill chips to fall onto electrical equipment, furnishings, heating ducts, etc.
  2. Remove excess sealant. Sealant should be debris/contaminant free (e.g. drill chips), consistent, and uniform in appearance.
  3. Clip excess wire tie protrusions.

 

Mounting

Mounting Position Considerations

DO

  • Lay all components out prior to installation to check for cable length and interference issues.
  • Choose a location which does not impede driver or co-driver entry.
  • Ensure location of the installed tablet does not block driver view (including mirrors and gauges) or interfere with safe operation of the vehicle’s controls.
  • Choose a location which is within easy reach of the driver or co-driver, and within normal line-of-sight.
  • Mount in the vehicle at a convenient height and angle for drivers and co-drivers to access.
  • Ensure that the placement of the tablet allows drivers and co-drivers to easily dock and undock the tablet.
  • Ensure the mounting surface is strong enough to support the RAM mount and Tab Active tablet.
  • Use the backing plate to secure the mount.

DO NOT

  • Do not mount the tablet in an area that may interfere with the deployment of an airbag.
  • Do not mount the tablet in a location that may impact the driver or co-driver in the event of an accident or sudden stop.
  • Do not mount the tablet in dirty or wet areas.
  • Do not mount the tablet in areas of direct sunlight.
  • Do not mount the tablet in front of an open AC or heater. If unable to install elsewhere, close the vent in front of which the tablet is installed.
  • Do not mount the tablet near windows and vents which may pass rain water.
  • Avoid mounting the tablet in an area that may limit leg room or where the tablet may likely be used as a foot or elbow rest, etc.
  • Do not mount the tablet below a beverage holder.

Cable Pre-Assembly

  1. Connect the male and the female 9-pin serial cables together using a flat head screwdriver.
  2. Attach one end of the 6-pin Molex cable to the power/serial dock adaptor (Part# 81656) and make sure it seats completely.
  3. Attach the 2-pin Molex connection from the serial cable assembly (Part# A100478) to the power/serial dock adaptor (Part# 81656).
  4. Attach the 8-pin Molex connection of the serial cable assembly (Part# A100478)to the 8-pin Molex connection of power adaptor cable (Part# A100486).

Samsung Tab Active Dock Installation

  1. Use the four hex socket cap head screws to mount the ball mount to the back of the dock.
    1. Insert the screws through the dock, then through the ball mount.
    2. Place a M4 flat washer onto the threads of the screw.
    3. Thread the M4 nylon lock nut onto the screw. Do not tighten until you attach the last three screws.
    4. Tighten all four M4 nylons nuts with a 7mm socket and a metric number 3 hex bit, until the ball mount is firmly secured to the new dock.
    5. Verify that no screw heads are protruding through the front of the dock. This can interfere with correct operation of the tablet.

  2. Mount the base ball mount for the RAM mount on the dashboard area. Use the backing plate to secure the mount. 
  3. Attach the post to the ball mount on the back of the dock and the base ball mount.

 

Wiring Installation

  1. Connect the 6-pin Molex cables of the power supply to the back of the dock.
  2. Plug the USB cable from the cable bundle to the dock (do not secure the cable to the dock yet).
  3. Unplug the 4-pin power cable from the telematics unit and plug it into the short 4-pin connection of the power cable assembly. Take care not to plug the 4-pin male connector to the charging box on the Tab Active assembly.

  4. Attach the 9-pin to the telematics unit.
  5. Attach the last two Molex connections on the cable bundle to the telematics unit. Connect the 4-pin connector last.
  6. Remove the tablet from its packaging and attach the provided case.
  7. Align the pins on the side of the Tab Active tablet with the terminal points on the dock. The screen should be facing out.
  8. Power on the vehicle and let it idle for 2 minutes.
  9. Power on the tablet.
  10. STARTING THE TABLET FOR THE 1ST TIME
    1. When the tablet prompts to use the USB connection, check the box and tap Yes.
    2. If the tablet does not detect the telematics unit the first time, the message "GPS device has not established a valid connection yet" appears. Wait 10-20 seconds. Undock and then redock the tablet to re-initiate the connection.
    3. After detection, the Manifest URL, Account information, Manifest, and Settings load onto the tablet.
    4. The driver login screen appears. Wait 10-20 seconds before logging in.
  11. Login to the tablet.
  12. Secure the USB cable to the dock with the USB clamp.
  13. Mount the dock to the vehicle with the clamp. Position the tablet to face the driver, then tighten the mount clamp.
  14. Use zip ties to secure loose cables.

System Check – Minimum Requirements

  1. An installer must perform a full system check to verify the connection and operation of the tablet.
  2. V4 System Check: Start vehicle engine and confirm the following LEDs:
     
    Cellular Solid Green
    GPS Solid Green or Orange
    Status Solid Green
  1. Power on the tablet and allow the device to boot up to the login screen:
    1. Scan the Driver card or manually enter the Driver ID.
    2. Enter the Driver PIN (Personal Identification Number).
  2. Verify on-board SIM is active:
    1. “No Service” should change to 3G/4G upon successful connection to a cell tower. This should take no more than one minute.
    2. Using the web browser, navigate to www.zonarsystems.com to test data connectivity.

Some websites may be restricted due to Zonar Security Policies.

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi® (Optional).
  2. Make sure that all purchased application(s) are present on the tablet. They may include one or more of the following applications:
  • ZLogs - Hours of Service application.
  • Navigation - Mapping and turn-by-turn direction application.

Refer to the Support site for operation instructions for applications and software on the tablet.

Operational Notes

  • Tablet requires a Zonar telematics box (V4) to operate.
  • Tablet must be fully docked to send most data to Zonar servers.
  • Power button:
    • Press and release to power-on, wake and place in sleep mode.
    • Press and hold to power down unit.
  • Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can affect tablet performance. See System Specifications.

EVIR Scanning

he scanner on the Tab Active3 is located in the upper right-hand corner on the back of the tablet. The scanner on the Tab Active2 is located on the back side of the tablet.

When it is necessary to scan an inspection tag during an EVIR inspection, a scanner location graphic displays on the screen. Touch the indicated area on the back of the tablet to the tag and hold for two seconds.
