Unidentified Driver Logs is a Compliance report designed to provide fleet admin with the tools you need to identify the most likely drivers for a given unidentified log and, after confirming, assign the log to the correct driver.
What causes an Unidentified Driver Log (UDL)?
Think of Electronic Driver Logs as maintaining a connection between the vehicle, the ELD itself, and the driver. When all three are active and recorded during a trip, the driver logs can be accurately and automatically reported. If any part of that chain breaks while the vehicle is in motion, however, the integrity of the driver log is called into question and the driver must confirm that the trip is theirs. A dispatcher or manager can assist with this process, but the driver must ultimately verify the log.
Zonar records the following possible reasons for a UDL:
-
Non-driving status in trip: The ELD was undocked while the vehicle was in motion AND the driver's logs recorded a non-driving status during that time.
- Non-driving statuses are any status other than Drive, Personal Conveyance, Yard Move, or High Rail.
- No driver logged in: The vehicle was in motion while no driver was signed into the ELD.
- Zonar Logs not installed: The vehicle was in motion while the Zonar Logs software was not installed on the ELD, whether it was docked or not.
-
Device was disconnected during trip: The ELD was undocked during the trip.
- This status is being deprecated in favor of Non-driving status in trip which more accurately captures unidentifiable driving.

Report Options
- Account: If you have access to multiple accounts, click here to select a specific account code.
- View Selected: Select multiple unassigned UDLs to access this function. This allows you to review multiple UDLs at once, as well as bulk assign.
- Export (CSV): Exports the current report results into a CSV file for further editing and filtering.
- Table Filters
-
Search to filter: If you know which asset(s) or driver(s) you need to look up, you can type part or all of the asset number or driver name here. You can only select one at a time, but multiple options can be selected in turn and the report will display all results matching any selected asset or driver. To remove a selection, click the X next to it.
- Date Range: Select from a list of preset date ranges, or use the calendar to select a customer date range. Defaults to the previous 7 days.
-
Status: Select one or more statuses by clicking the checkbox next to the desired status type:
- In Motion: An issue has caused a trip to be marked as UDL, but the trip is not yet complete.
- Pending: The UDL has been assigned to a driver and is pending acceptance or rejection.
- Unassigned: The UDL has not been assigned to a driver yet.
- Rejected: The driver has not accepted the UDL and it is still unassigned.
- Assigned: The UDL has been assigned.
- Home Location: Click to select from a list of locations in the account. You can search for specific locations, and select one or more by clicking the checkbox next to the desired locations.
- Min distance (mi/km): Enter a value to filter out any unidentified trips shorter than that distance.
- Max distance (mi/km): Enter a value to filter out any unidentified trips longer than that distance.
- UDL Reason: Click to filter unidentified trips by the stated reasons.
-
Search to filter: If you know which asset(s) or driver(s) you need to look up, you can type part or all of the asset number or driver name here. You can only select one at a time, but multiple options can be selected in turn and the report will display all results matching any selected asset or driver. To remove a selection, click the X next to it.
- Report Results: The report will automatically update any time a filter or setting is changed.
- Asset Number: The asset on which the UDL was created.
- Asset Location: The home location the asset is assigned to in Ground Traffic Control.
- Status: The current status of the UDL.
- Start Date / Time: The time the affected trip began. This is not the same as the time the issue which caused the UDL occurred.
- End Date / Time: The time the affected trip ended. If the status is currently In Motion, this shows as N/A as the trip has not yet completed.
- Distance: The length of the affected trip. If the status is currently In Motion, this shows as 0 as the trip has not yet completed.
- Last Known Driver: Lists the last driver known to have some recent involvement with the vehicle, such as the last driver to be logged in or the last driver to complete an inspection. Zonar does NOT make the determination that the last known driver is the actual driver during the UDL. This information is provided as a starting point for research to discover which driver the UDL should be assigned to, but is not guaranteed to be correct.

Actions
- Assign: If the trip is complete and unassigned, click to quickly assign the associated trip to a driver. Only one trip at a time may be assigned in this way; to assign more trips at once, access them via the View Selected button. See UDL Details for more information.
-
UDL Reason: The reason the ELD flagged the trip as being an unidentified trip. This can be one of four reasons:
- Device was disconnected during trip.
- No driver logged in.
- Zonar Logs not installed.
- Non-driving status in trip.
If you need to read the full reason, hover your cursor over the field to display a tooltip.
For more information on what each of these reasons means, see What causes an Unidentified Driver Log (UDL)? at the top of this page.
- More Details: Click the down arrow to display more information about the UDL. See the More Details section below for more information.
More Details
- Start Location: The ELD-recorded location where the trip began. This is not the same as the location where the issue which caused the UDL occurred.
- End Location: The ELD-recorded location where the trip ended.
UDL Details
To view the details or one or more unidentified trip, click the box on the left of the entry or entries, then click View Selected in the upper right.
This opens the UDL Details screen, which displays all relevant information about the trip. The screen defaults to the Logs tab when opened.
Logs
-
Trips: Displays all selected trips. By default, details for only one trip will be shown at a time. Click the desired trip to display details for that trip.
- Preview All: Click to display the effects to a driver's logs if they accept all selected UDLs.
- Assign all: Click to assign the selected trips to a single driver. See Assigning UDLs for more information.
- Maps/Logs Toggle: Click to switch between the Logs view (displayed by default) and the Map view.
- Driver: If the trips have a Last Known Driver associated with it, the driver is displayed here. Click to select a different driver if necessary.
- Logs: The selected driver's logs are displayed here. There are three possible views:
- Edited Log: Displays the driver's log for the day the trip occurred as if the driver had accepted the trip into their log. The dark green shows the specific trip section. If the trip spans more than one day, all affected days are shown.
- Original Log: Displays the driver's log for the day the trip began without the selected unidentified trip. This screen should match the driver's current logs prior to assigning the trip.
- Clocks as of today: Displays the driver's log for the current day assuming the driver accepts the trip into their logs. This view helps avoid accidentally putting the driver into an undesired duty status.
- Trip Details: Displays all information about the trip shown on the main report screen.
Map
The Map view retains the sidebar, but replaces the log details with the standard Zonar map view. The selected trip is shown from the green start icon to the red end icon, with arrows indicating direction of travel.
When viewing a UDL currently in motion on the map, the path updates every 20 seconds until the period of unidentified driving is complete.

Assigning UDLs
If you only need to assign one UDL, you can click the Assign button in the report to display the Assign window.
Multiple UDLs can be assigned at once by selecting the desired trips, clicking View selected, then clicking Assign all in the Trip Details screen.
- The window opens with Driver as the default selection. If known, type the name of the driver to assign the UDL to.
- If there is a reason to not assign it to any driver (for example, a mechanic drove the vehicle within the yard), click the No driver reasons tab on the dropdown and select the appropriate reason no driver can be assigned to this trip. There are several preconfigured No Driver Reasons, but custom reasons can be defined on the No Driver Reason page.
- Add any comments regarding why this is being assigned to the selected driver or reason. If being assigned to a driver, these comments will be displayed to the driver when deciding whether to accept or reject the UDL.
- Select Send to assign the UDL.
If your company routinely experiences unidentified driving within your yard(s), you may benefit from the UDL Auto-Assign feature. See Auto-Assigning UDLs in Yards or Zones for details on this feature and how to sign up.
