The Posted Speed report compares a vehicle's recorded speed against the posted speed limit for the roads it traveled on.
How are Speeding Events Defined?
The posted speed limits are provided by HEREĀ© Maps. See Posted Speed Data Disclaimers at the bottom of this article for more details on Zonar's posted speed data.
The Posted Speed report consolidates data based on the Severity of the speeding event and the Speed Classification of the vehicle the event has been assigned to.
Severity
The Posted Speed report categorizes speeding events based on three parameters.
- Duration (grace period): The amount of time an asset can be over the speed limit before a speeding event is logged. Defaults to 30 seconds. The grace period is not included in the total duration of the speeding event. It is assumed that the grace period is an acceptable length of time to be over the speed limit and so is not counted against the asset. For example, using the default period of 30 seconds, if an asset spent 85 seconds speeding, the report will log the speeding event as 55 seconds.
- Minor: A low severity speeding event. Speeding over the posted limit but below the Minor threshold is not counted as a speeding event. Defaults to 5 miles per hour over the speed limit.
- Critical: A high severity speeding event. If a speeding event reaches the Critical threshold, it no longer counts as a Minor event. Defaults to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Minor and Critical speeds can be customized to your fleet's needs in Threshold Settings .
Speed Classification
An asset's speed classification determines which posted speed limits apply to that asset. Speed classifications for assets can be set in the Unit Settings tab of the Admin page.
- Standard: The typical posted speed limit for the road is used.
- Truck: If the road shows a different posted speed limit for heavy duty trucks, that speed limit is used instead.
- Undefined: Used when a speed class hasn't been set for the asset yet. Undefined uses the truck speed limit. If you want the asset to use standard speed limits, which are typically less restrictive, be sure to change its speed class appropriately.
Using the Posted Speed Report
The Posted Speed report presents data regarding each vehicle's speeding events. The report can be filtered to show a specific asset's speeding events.
Top 10 critical assets: Displays a list of the ten (10) assets with the most Critical speeding events within the date range. Click either the asset name or the number of Critical events to view the list of events.
Speeding events over time: Displays a graph of the total Minor and Critical speeding events per day within the selected date range for the filtered assets. The graph type can be changed by clicking either the Bar Graph or Line Graph
icons.
Speeding events: Groups speeding information based on the active tab.
- Assets: Displays all assets with at least one speeding event that matches the selected filters. Assets are sorted by the Total Events recorded.
- Events: Displays all speeding events that match the selected filters. Events are sorted by their Max Over speed.
Posted Speed Data Disclaimers
Where speeds differ, the Posted Speed refers automotive speeds or truck speeds as applicable. It does not take into consideration variable zones, school zones, or non-white or caution signs such as yellow curve MPH signs. Only white signs are used.
HEREĀ© provides posted speeds used in this report to Zonar. If a posted speed is incorrect or obsolete, see the article How to Report Posted Speed Corrections.

Certain roads may not be included in the report results. This may be due to the classification level of the roads. Only arterial roads as defined by the FWHA are included in the posted speed report; non-arterials such as residential roads are not included.
